I wasn’t planning on watching this show, but some buzz about it being like girls gone wild piqued my interest.
Picking up the mantle of girls being perverted from B Gata H Kei, Seitokai Yakuindomo is completely different from what I expected.
What I expected: Another Seitokai no Ichizon.
What I got: A perverted Lucky Star.
The raunchy first episode caught me by surprise. It was funny watching the typically straight laced student council president take interview cues from gravure videos. And it’s just as funny listening to Satomi Satou pull off her best perverted Alicia Florence impersonation. But then I watched the second episode and it wasn’t quite as funny as the first. Maybe it lost a bit of its novelty, or maybe the episode just wasn’t as strong. But a lot of the humor in Yakuindomo is built around getting kicks from seeing classy, upstanding girls with minds of a 13-year old boy. Once you get past that, it’s not terribly original.
All in all, it’s not a bad show. There are some genuinely funny moments. But I don’t know how much staying power it has. Raunchy humor is actually really tough to do. Because it relies on shock factor, you have to keep escalating and escalating it, otherwise it goes stale and loses its punch. Can Yakuindomo keep doing that? Or will it level off and resort to the same sort of gags? I’m guessing the latter is more likely, but nevertheless it’s worth watching once to see if you like it or not. Between the two raunchy comedies, this and Mitsudomoe, I’d guess that Mitsudomoe is more likely to be able to keep up the outrageousness.
