Goodbye Gonzo, Hello… Gonzo?

NHK SnH SW

It’s been a tough few months for Gonzo. First they announced that they were reducing their anime output from 8 to 4 shows a year. Then they were rumored to be cutting up to 50 jobs – and ended up announcing that they were cutting a 100. Then they announced that they were dissolving Gonzo… and rebranding the parent company (GDH) with the Gonzo name. Ok, that last bit of news is more of a pretty smart corporate decision than anything ground shaking. But to say that it’s not exactly a stable studio right now would be an understatement. Not to mention the amusing SC rumors that Gonzo was considering turning to ero anime to avoid bankruptcy (I’ll bet the R+V team is just dying for that to happen).

While I’ve noticed that Gonzo doesn’t exactly have a stellar rep (Ok, I’m being gracious there), but as the studio that produced:

  • Welcome to the NHK – among the most twistedly hilarious and amusing shows I’ve ever seen
  • Seto no Hanayome – my favorite comedy, hands down. Although I’m guessing we’ll never see it licensed in the US what with the cuts and all :-( (I stand corrected. See comments.)
  • Strike Witches – brainless and shamelessly ecchi? Totally. But also pretty hilarious and just fun to watch.

I hope their recent moves will stop the bleeding and they eventually turn things around and get back on track. I’d hate to see a studio go belly up. Especially when they’ve delivered a couple of my faves. Plus, I want my second seasons of Seto no Hanayome and Strike Witches!

oh sweet! I must’ve missed that… Hmm, “My Bride is a Mermaid,” I probably never would’ve caught that. Awesome news though, thanks for the info!

:sight: Well is better just to remember the good times when they did Last exile, Gankutsuou and Red garden. You can really feel the love for the art in that works.
I just hope that Manglove will have a great come back or they gonna end just like this.
