Spring 2010 First Impressions: Working!!

Apparently this was just a preview airing of the first episode of Working. The show doesn’t really kick off until the first week of April.

It’s Shizzy-chan and Izaya-kun!

Like Scamp mentions in his review of Working, the show’s characters do fall into the trap of being quirky for the sake of being quirky. Why does the Crew Chief carry a sword? It’s not like she uses it for anything. How does Inami manage to walk to work without bludgeoning random men on the street? Why is the manager so lazy? Just ’cause she is. I could’ve done without all these quirks. I’d rather have had Crew Chief just been a normal mature girl stereotype without the sword. Inami just be cripplingly shy instead of being androphobic. And the manager? Well, I wouldn’t change anything about her, but she doesn’t need to tell us she’s lazy, just show it to us. Besides, she didn’t seem all that lazy, just quick-tempered.

Working’s actually sort of enjoyable when it’s not blatantly winking at or focusing on these quirks. I like Popura’s genkiness, and I especially like hearing Kana Isumi voice her. Takanashi doesn’t seem like a bad male lead. And it seems like Daisuke Ono and Hiroshi Kamiya will carry on their bickering from DRRR. The artwork is appropriately cute and the animation’s pretty solid. If Working can focus itself on a "storyline" or just on some slice of life moments, instead of the forced quirks, I think it’ll be a fun show to watch. If not… then I’ll make a short run of it.

Maybe they’re just being blatant about it so, come April, we can jump directly into the series. I shudder to think that after this, they’ll spend two or three episodes reintroducing the characters. So long as A-1 views this “preview” as the actual introduction, I think the series can do quite well.

Well, I’m gonna give it a couple episodes, because I often can use a laugh. I have worked in several restaurants, so I appreciate that they made fun of managers that create the schedule as a form of punishment for trivial personal slights. :) This show isn’t high up my list of anticipated Spring series, though.
