Read through the first post on that anime thread carefully. Take particular note of Nichijou’s DVD sales figures. And let it sink in that these sub-1000 sales is for a Kyoto Animation anime.
Kyoto Animation pulling down fewer than a thousand DVD sales from Nichijou is truly a clamorously careering collapse for what previously seemed like the ultimate brand name in the industry. But due to that collapse, and the meteoric Madoka Magica rise, I would argue that SHAFT has now overtaken Kyoto Animation as the biggest and strongest name in the anime industry. Nichijou, being the latest work of the lofty Kyoto Animation, has received a fair bit of attention. It has already been compared to such comedic luminaries as Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star. And it does in fact share much in common with both of these famous anime works.
However, I think that it has a key flaw that prevents it from working as well as those two did. In this blog entry, I will explore that flaw, while also stating how I think it says something of essential importance about Kyoto Animation itself.
Spring is here. And KyoAni’s back doing what KyoAni does best – animating cute girls doing weird things. Or so it would seem.
Ok, spring preview. This is typically my soapbox to bitch about how it’s incredibly late, how putting it together is a pain in the ass, and how the new season is going to suck. But… hey, baseball has begun so might as well kick back and enjoy. Plus, the new season doesn’t look that bad.
