Twelve Moments in Anime 2009: #5 – The Macross Frontier Montage

CCY has thrown down his Twelve Moments of Anime gauntlet, inviting others to join him everyday until Christmas in recalling their 12 favorite anime-related things of the year. Continuing the countdown with moment #5, a moment from a 2008 anime that I didn’t see until this year, but a moment that’s permanently imprinted in my mind.

Alto and Brera clear out the way

If you asked me to picture an anime action scene in my head, there’s one scene that instantly pops to mind. I don’t know if it’s a particularly seminal scene, but for whatever reason it’s stuck in my head. Macross Frontier – the series finale – the final fight against the Vajra. Alto is making a last ditch rush at the queen Vajra. The Nyan Nyan service melody is playing in the background (which by the way is 12+ minutes musical fanservice heaven for fans of Macross Frontier’s music). As Alto makes his final rush, he suddenly becomes prone to an enemy attack when Ranka’s brother, Brera shows up out of nowhere to save his hide and link up with Alto for the final hit. This after seeing Ranka save Sheryl and seeing images of them singing projecting across the cosmos.

Alto locks on

Explosions are shooting off everywhere. Brera and Alto go back to back in a sweeping 360 and then we see it. Alto’s eyes darting all over the place as he watches his final attacks lock on multiple locations. It lasted all of about 2 seconds, and the setup was incredibly simple, but the feeling, the look, and the style was perfect, and frankly it was just so damn cool. The animation is top notch, the CGI blended to near perfection. A culmination of 15 minutes of climax after climax. I get chills just thinking about it. THIS. This is how an action show should end. It tapped into all those childhood feelings when you believed unequivocally in the power of heroes. Gundam 00 should’ve took notes. Ok, now that I’m thinking about it, I gotta go listen to that medley again. Ah hell, I won’t be selfish, you go check it out too. Live! Wish I was there!

Loved the final episode, even more so than any other shows last year, but episode 12 of Macross Frontier will remain to be my favourite of all time.

The montage was spectacular, and it was also kinda funny at the same time since there were moments where the heroes are just shooting off into space and not hitting anything in particular.
