Winter 2010 First Impressions: Durarara!!

The season’s most anticipated show has arrived, does it live up to the brilliance of Baccano?

Durarara's headless horseman
Give back Horo!

In a word, from the first episode, no. It doesn’t even come close. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure this show will be fan-fricking-tasting. But this first episode? Was yawn-inducingly boring. I suppose that’s the problem when the whole episode is mostly about introducing tons of characters that I still couldn’t pick out in a police lineup. Oh, they’ll probably be interesting. Like the tall, black Russian sushi chef, or the girl with the neck surgery scar, or the headless horseman, or the guy we never see that tosses vending machines in the background. But for this episode, they were all pretty boring. The problem was the two guys driving the episode, the Firo Prochainezo lookalike, and the newbie who looks like he stepped out of Yozakura Quartet, didn’t have that instant attraction like say… Miria and Isaac-ku had. So it was hard to really care what they were talking about, since all they did was reference characters that we either saw for three seconds, or were referenced as bad-asses. We’ll learn those characters eventually, no need to overload the first episode with meaningless introductions. Plus, nothing really happened, except that a couple hooligans kidnapped Horo, and a headless biker may or may not have saved her.

The colors looked a little too dark and washed out, but the show looked pretty good otherwise. The Yozakura Quartet-like art style isn’t bad, but it’s just going to take me a little time to get used to it and wipe the bad taste of that terrible show out of my mouth. The background music is excellent, with some good eclectic tunes, while the OP and EDs are pretty good. The OP is nowhere near as good as Guns and Roses’, but I like the rap/pop ED much more than Baccano’s ED.

I’m being a little harsh, because I expected much more out of Durarara. I’ll definitely keep watching, as I mentioned, there should be an interesting backstory at play, and a lot of crazy characters (although I’m guessing it’ll be unlikely that any of them will reach Ladd Russo or Graham Specter levels) doing what crazy characters do. But hopefully they pick up the pace in the next episode.

  1. Oh man, YQ was such a bad adaptation (manga was ok), but I loved the art style so I was drawn to DRRR!! immediately. It’s a good thing to have seen Baccano first just to have faith in the staff, but I agree this was not the most exciting of first episodes.

    1. Yeah, the first episodes for the shows I’ve anticipated most this season have been surprisingly underwhelming (DRRR, Bund, Ookami). It’s sort of a disturbing trend.

  2. “does it live up to the brilliance of Baccano?”
–> I think it does but in a different way xD DRRR seems to be trying to be more audience friendly (because the majority is more used to the standard story formulas).

There was a Firo lookalike? I only spotted hairalikes xD

I think Izaya and Shizuo will be candidates in reaching Ladd and Graham craziness xD Haha! But perhaps they won’t be as brutal (because I don’t think DRRR will be as gory as Baccano, sadly, LOLz)

    1. I think part of the brilliance of Baccano was the multiple timelines that had you trying to figure out what was going on. Actually, it probably doesn’t start making complete sense until you watch it a second time through. So in the sense that DRRR stays in one timeline, yeah it was a little more audience friendly. But less interesting too. Oh well, it was just one episode, so I’m not too worried.

You don’t think Masaomi looks a bit like Firo? He just needs the gangster hat. 😉

I am looking forward to the Izaya and Shizuo fireworks. Should be fun. 😀

      1. I find that side of Baccano brilliant as well *_* Figuring out what was going on had been fun and interesting~

No . . . I also see Kida as a Firo hairalike. Hmmm . . . maybe I’ve been staring at Firo so much that I can differentiate him from his “look alikes” xD Haha!

Oh hopefully there’ll be Shizuo and Izaya crazy interaction in the next episode xD

  3. I’d say this first episode was one of those “throw a bit of everything at the watcher” type episode. I still enjoyed it but you’re right about it being no Baccano.

  4. Does anyone remember the first episode of Baccano? It was basically all character introduction, for awhile I thought episodes 1 and 2 of Baccano were the same episode, because nothing happened in the first.
